Relational monism posits that reality consists of a single, indivisible field whose structure is determined by the intensities and configurations of relation. Within this framework, relational patterns constitute the primary mode of ontological articulation. They are not discrete objects but localised arrangements of relational gradients that give rise to the phenomena ordinarily interpreted as entities.
These patterns emerge from variations in relational density. Where the field condenses, stable configurations arise; where it attenuates, the field remains diffuse. The resulting structures are not ontologically independent. They are expressions of the field’s internal modulation, shaped by the interplay of intensities rather than by the presence of substances. This ensures that differentiation does not compromise unity: the field remains continuous even as it generates complex patterns.
Relational patterns therefore function as the field’s means of producing multiplicity. They allow for the emergence of distinct phenomena without introducing dualistic divisions. A phenomenon is defined by the specific configuration of relational intensities that constitute its presence. Its identity is not intrinsic but relational, dependent on the broader field in which it is embedded. As these intensities shift, the phenomenon evolves, dissolves, or reorganises, yet it never detaches from the field.
This model reframes classical metaphysical categories. Substance becomes a high‑density relational pattern; process becomes the modulation of intensities; identity becomes a stable configuration within a continuum. The field does not contain objects; it patterns itself. These patterns may exhibit autonomy, but their autonomy is functional rather than ontological. They remain inseparable from the field’s continuous fabric.
The study of relational patterns thus becomes central to monistic ontology. It provides a means of interpreting complexity, emergence, and differentiation without resorting to dualistic categories. It situates all phenomena within a single continuum of relational intensities, ensuring that multiplicity is always a modulation of unity rather than a departure from it.
